A word from Achmea employees

Marcel Kroon
Productmanager Sparen – divisie Achmea Bank
Marcel Kroon completed the ‘Help with money matters’ course together with 100 other colleagues
The ‘Help with money matters’ course was created in cooperation with Nibud. Financially, the Achmea Foundation made the course possible together with the Old Age Security chain within Achmea. Through the Voor Elkaar platform, Achmea employees had the option to register for the course. After completing the course, employees are financial helpmates. This enables them to help others as volunteers with financial problems. The course was evaluated with a score of 8.3.
"I was inspired to become a financial helpmate by a good friend. After completing the course, I have the necessary knowledge to offer a helping hand in my environment. The course is a great basis for me to understand a financial situation and help people close to me.”

Petra van der Voort
Communication & PR consultant – Divisie Centrale dienstverlening
Crowdfunding for Stichting Uitgestelde Kinderfeestjes | Doubled by Achmea Foundation
As a Communication & PR consultant, Petra van der Voort regularly does voluntary work for the Stichting Uitgestelde Kinderfeestjes. The Foundation is committed to helping children who cannot afford to have a children’s birthday party. In November, she published an appeal on Achmeanet to raise awareness of crowdfunding for this great cause.
“I often stop and think about how good we have it, even though this pandemic period of course brings constraints and challenges for everyone. For children living in poverty, something like celebrating a birthday is often not even within reach. I have children myself and I know how a children’s party with your friends is one of the highlights of the year. It gives me great satisfaction to be able to make a difference for these children.”
The crowdfunding raised €1,140 among Achmea employees and the foundation doubled that amount to €2,280. Achmea employees could also choose to make a donation to the Stichting Uitgestelde Kinderfeestjes instead of an end-of-year gift.

Ignace (jr & sr) Konig
Datawarehouse en Beheer – Divisie Zilveren Kruis
A few years ago I went to Kenya on behalf of the Achmea Foundation. I was part of a delegation from TNO and Amref. It was an instructive time and a pleasant introduction to the Achmea Foundation and Sabine-Cécile.
Last Christmas, I was surprised by a nice gift from the Achmea Foundation (AF): a sandwich, butter, a chocolate bar and an AF face mask. A nice surprise in this Corona period. Coincidentally, a few weeks later, Sabine-Cécile asked for analysis help in a general call on Yammer. With the positive vibe of the attention in mind, I responded together with my son, Ignace Jr. Jr is also employed by Achmea for a few hours a week. For about two years now, he has been giving weekly training in Python & AI to analysts at ZK. Without him, I would not be able to deal with AF’s analysis question. To be honest, Jr does the analysis, and I as Sr am only somewhat involved.
The analysis question concerns the setting up of a micro-credit trust score. A bit like a credit rating – but with a little more social dynamism. The client is NGO Sevi. One of Sevi’s objectives is to reduce the high interest rates on micro-credits (35% - 40%!!!!) by using an effective platform to better match supply and demand. Call it the Über of micro-credits. We have just started and it is very interesting. Unfortunately, we are not going to Kenya and, like every Achmea employee, we’re working from the attic. Including for this assignment.
At my previous job, I was a quantitative risk manager, with the main task of creating credit-rating models. This knowledge comes in handy now. And it’s also very nice to be able to pass on the knowledge after all. Thanks to the Achmea Foundation.

Nico Heijnen
Teammanager Integratie SAP - Divisie Achmea IT
Nico Heijnen is the first Achmea employee to take on a remote Expert Volunteer Assignment
“In June 2019, I saw that one of the things Amani was seeking help with was setting up an information system to record and track the children in their care. The underlying idea is that this type of system will offer greater oversight and insight into Amani’s efforts to reunite children living on the streets with their families. This would lead to greater effectiveness and efficiency in Amani’s work and ultimately improve the situation of the children who live on the streets day and night. Given my IT background, this seemed like a good opportunity to make a concrete contribution to a project that I find worthy and beneficial.
After studying Amani’s documentation and speaking extensively to their Dutch director, Meindert Schaapuit, I concluded that a visit to Amani would not be worthwhile at that time. Their requirements were clear and it seemed that only a long-term cooperation with Amani could lead to the desired result. In the meantime, we had also come to the conclusion that such a system – free or nearly free – specifically for NGOs was not yet available.
With that, I started an assignment that deviated significantly from the original assignment. An assignment that I could not do alone. Fortunately, one of our preferred IT suppliers, RoJo consultancy in Breukelen, was prepared to develop a minimum viable product without any quid pro quo. In the meantime, a system in which the details of children and their families are recorded and the children's ‘timeline’ can be followed is now almost ready. And there is still much to be done to further develop the system so that it can be used as a ‘white label’ system by other organisations that focus on helping street children. As a result, 2021 will also be a very exciting year for me.” The assignment was awarded through our partner SPICA International Corporate.

Daan Bakker
Data visualisation specialist - Divisie Schade & Inkomen
Due to COVID-19, Daan Bakker carried out a remote assignment instead of an on-site assignment
Jifundishe is an organisation in Tanzania that helps the community develop by providing training, books and computers. To better communicate their story, they were looking for someone who could help collect their data and translate it into insightful visualisations. In May 2020, I was set to leave for Tanzania to embark on this challenge. Unfortunately, this was not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but together with the Achmea Foundation and Jifundishe, we made it possible for this assignment to take place remotely. During our weekly video calls, we drew up a framework for the most important control information and translated it into an annual report.
My main learning objective for the assignment was cooperation and communication with other cultures. Because video conversations seemed to increase the effect of those cultural differences, I certainly learned a lot. In addition, once the world has returned to normal, I will be welcome in Tanzania to continue this assignment.
The assignment was awarded through our partner SPICA International Corporate.

Card promotion with Omapost
This year, together with Omapost, participant ImpactPlus 2019, the Achmea Foundation organised a card campaign for Achmea employees. Letting people know that you are thinking of them, connecting with each other: a postcard is very good for that. It is not something fleeting. A greeting card is something you can look at and hold and read again and enjoy. In other words, a card creates a moment of joy. Frits Moonen of Omapost: “It was a lot of fun to finish the prize with a promotion with and at Achmea itself. Rarely has a prize been as timely as the Achmea Foundation’s ImpactPlus campaign for Omapost. Thanks in part to you, we were able to keep up with the corresponding growth just when the world needed connection the most. The impact we have been able to make this year is unparalleled and we have been able to scale up on all fronts thanks to the foundation. On behalf of the entire team, I would like to thank you very much!”
