Measuring the impact

Creating impact is always the Achmea Foundation’s starting point

We focus on the target group and consciously select innovations that will have a big impact on them. This allows us to consider the long-term prospects as well. By means of targeted investments in our partners’ social projects, we can achieve important economical and social returns. Measuring impact plays an important role in this respect. The Achmea Foundation uses impact measurements to predict and then monitor social returns.

The Achmea Foundation monitors all the projects to which they have given a donation or loan

The Achmea Foundation aims to be an ‘engaged donor’. With all the knowledge and expertise available in the foundation’s network, we can add value to our project partners through positive critical feedback. We monitor projects by having regular contact with the project organisations. Monitoring and evaluations are also carried out and discussed in the Board. This is important to us because we want projects to be and remain sustainable. Including in the future. We therefore use various methods to monitor and evaluate projects: Social Return on Investment (SROI), Daly Return on Investment, stakeholder analyses and feasibility analyses. This enables us to properly assess the projects for sustainability within the entire context. The following key elements are included in the monitoring and evaluations.

  • The expected impact on the target group is shown by an SROI/DROI calculation and the indication of an ‘additional’ impact (innovative character, extent to which scaling up is possible, degree to which Achmea can contribute to the impact, for example, by using expertise).
  • The Social Return On Investment (SROI) focuses on the social return. This means that we not only look at the economic return, but rather the impact on the target group. The SROI reflects a financial value of the measured social effects and results.
  • The SROI methodology is not suitable for projects aimed at strengthening people's health. Here, where possible, we express the expected impact as a Daly Return On Investment (DROI) in the expected number of life years gained.
  • Financial sustainability of the chain (stakeholders): ‘Who are the stakeholders and what are the costs and benefits for them after scaling up?’ These include a stakeholder analysis and the value chain sustainability. In other words, the benefits (financial and non-financial) and drawbacks (financial and non-financial) for the stakeholders in the value chain. Here, the impact that the project has or can have on other people and organisations is also looked at. Finally, all influencers are identified.
  • Other aspects of feasibility: the feasibility is estimated based on 13 indicators and expressed as a figure. These include the local presence of the organisation, the interest in the product or service, the experience of the partners, whether the required resources are available, whether there are any legal issues, whether the business case is feasible and so on.

The Achmea Foundation makes an important contribution to Achmea’s impact ambitions

The Achmea Foundation actively contributes to Achmea’s strategy: working together towards a healthy, safe and future-proof society. And in particular to Achmea’s impact ambitions (Health closer to everyone; Clean, safe and smart mobility; Safe and sustainable living and working environment; Carefree entrepreneurship and good employment practices; (Financial) solutions for now, later and in the future; Climate action). With its four impactful programmes, the foundation contributes to various impact ambitions. The Achmea Foundation has an impact, particularly in the areas of Health closer to everyone, Carefree entrepreneurship and good employment practices and (Financial) solutions for now, later and in the future.

Impact Fund’s contribution to impact ambitions

The Achmea Foundation invests in projects that build on the local population’s own strength and empowerment by means of donations, loans and/or the provision of knowledge and expertise. The focus here is on Healthcare, Agriculture and Finance, with an emphasis on sustainability and technology.

The Impact Fund supports projects that contribute to bringing health closer to everyone and ensuring a safe and sustainable living and working environment. Additionally, the Impact Fund invests in projects in Africa that have a sustainable impact on the climate.

ImpactPlus’ contribution to impact ambitions

ImpactPlus is an initiative of the Achmea Foundation for social entrepreneurs in the care and welfare sector. With an intensive growth programme, we help innovative scale-ups to professionalise their business and increase their social impact. In doing so, ImpactPlus contributes to the impact ambitions in the area of Health closer to everyone.

Achmea Voor Elkaar’s contribution to impact ambitions

Achmea Voor Elkaar is the Achmea Foundation’s online platform, on which employees can start or support social initiatives to make the Netherlands a little healthier, safer or more future-proof. Achmea Voor Elkaar offers initiatives that contribute to bringing health closer to everyone, initiatives to improve traffic safety, initiatives that contribute to a safer living and working environment and initiatives to improve the climate. Achmea Voor Elkaar also lists various initiatives that can contribute to the development and sustainable employability of Achmea employees, such as guest lecturer at a school and a training course to help people who have run into financial problems or are at risk of running into such problems.

Contribution of Expert Volunteer Assignments to impact ambitions

The foundation’s Expert Volunteer Assignments programme is closely linked to Achmea’s TOP (Talent, Development, Performance) programme. We offer Achmea employees opportunities for further development so that they are and remain sustainably employable.

Volunteer policy

Since the Achmea Foundation does not work directly with volunteers, it has not defined a special policy for this purpose. Volunteers can of course participate in the projects financed by the foundation. In addition, through the Voor Elkaar platform, Achmea employees are also encouraged to make a social contribution.
