This is how the Achmea Foundation works

Objective of the Achmea Foundation: Sustainable impact on the socio-economic situation of the most vulnerable people in the Netherlands and in developing countries.

We will achieve this objective by focusing on four strategic goals of the foundation. These four strategic goals have been translated into four impactful programmes.

Achmea Foundation Impact Fund

The Achmea Foundation invests by means of donations, loans and/or the provision of knowledge and expertise in projects that build on the local population’s own strength and empowerment. Here we want to reach a niche market by investing in innovative projects (venture capital) in the fields of agriculture, healthcare and finance, with an emphasis on sustainability and technology. Themes that also play an important role within Achmea as an organisation. We focus on Africa in particular. In 2020, seven organisations received a donation or loan from us.

Expert Volunteer Assignments

The Achmea Foundation also invests in initiatives by making knowledge and expertise available to social organisations. By sharing knowledge, we want to make a sustainable contribution to impactful initiatives. This enables organisations to achieve a greater or faster impact and creates opportunities for personal development of employees.

These assignments can take place on all continents, but also at our partner organisations in the Netherlands. Due to COVID-19, we were unfortunately unable to carry out any physical assignments last year. The Expert Volunteer Assignments took place remotely. Fortunately, we have been able to help many organisations and contribute to the development of Achmea employees.

ImpactPlus Incubator

: ImpactPlus is an initiative of the Achmea Foundation for social entrepreneurs in the care and welfare sector. With an intensive growth programme, we help innovative scale-ups to professionalise their business and increase their social impact. In 2020, the theme was ‘Unrecognised talent: from safety net to springboard’. Eight entrepreneurs were selected for the programme: The Chairmen At Work, ImPOWER, Model for Models, Oefenen.nl, Onbeperkt aan de Slag, Spectrum, WeDoWe and Welkom.

When asked how likely it is that the participating entrepreneurs of edition ImpactPlus 2020 would recommend the growth programme to another social enterprise, they gave it a score of 9.6 (on a scale of 0 to 10).

The programme was designed in such a way that all participating entrepreneurs gained relevant insights and points for improvement for the growth of their business. Due to COVID 19, this year’s programme was entirely digital, which led to the use of video content, creative multimedia, a live stream and an online event. Ultimately, 445 interested people participated in the online ImpactPlus Event from home.

Achmea Voor Elkaar

Achmea Voor Elkaar is the online platform where Achmea employees can start or support social initiatives to make the Netherlands a little healthier, safer or more future-proof. There have been four crowdfunding campaigns in 2020: for De Voedselbank, for Stichting Uitgestelde Kinderfeestjes, for Stichting Wielewaal and for the purchase of a play set and colouring pack for at home. The latter campaign was made possible by school articles supplier Rolf. Thanks to the doubling of the Achmea Foundation, almost €50,000 went to these charities.
